What is Instagram engagement rate?

Engagement rate is the share of your audience — or of the people who actually saw a post — that interacts with it. Likes, comments, saves and shares all count as interactions. It tells you whether your content is prompting people to act, rather than just getting scrolled past.

Engagement rate by followers = (likes + comments + saves + shares ÷ posts)÷ followers × 100. Take an account with 10,000 followers and 10 recent posts. If those posts earned 4,000 likes, 500 comments, 300 saves and 200 shares, that is 5,000 interactions in total — 500 per post — which is 5% of the followers.

The by-reach version swaps followers for your average reach: per-post interactions÷ average reach × 100. Using the same 500 interactions per post with an average reach of 8,000 gives 6.25%.

Engagement by followers vs by reach

Followers measures how your whole audience responds; reach measures how the people who actually saw a post respond. They answer different questions. An account can have a large follower base but most posts only appear to a fraction of it in the feed, so the by-followers number stays low even when real viewers engage well.

For the same amount of interaction, a reach-based rate is always higher, because reach is usually smaller than followers. It is also the fairer number to compare against when you change how often or when you post, or when you look at individual pieces of content. Watch both, but track the by-reach figure over time.

Where to find these numbers

All of these figures come from Instagram Insights, which is available on professional and creator accounts. Likes and comments are on each post, while saves and shares appear in the insights for each post. To get average reach, add the reach of your recent posts and divide by how many posts you counted — or use the reach figure Instagram reports for a recent window.

How to improve your engagement rate

  • Ask a clear question in the caption and answer every real comment in the first couple of hours — replying early keeps the conversation going.
  • Post at the times your audience is actually online, using the activity insights from your professional account.
  • Make content worth saving — tips, checklists and step-by-step carousels invite saves, which show people found the post genuinely useful.
  • Open the caption with a hook so the first line stops the scroll instead of describing the photo.
  • Reply to and pin a thoughtful comment on each post so the conversation keeps growing after you publish.
