What is YouTube engagement rate?

Engagement rate measures how strongly viewers respond to a video relative to how many people watched it. Likes, comments and shares all count as engagement, and the rate is shown as a percentage of views.

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. Take a video with 10,000 views, 400 likes, 100 comments and 50 shares: 550 engagements out of 10,000 views gives an engagement rate of 5.5%. A video that gets primarily passive views — people watching without clicking like or commenting — will sit well below that.

Like rate and comment rate

The like rate (likes ÷ views) shows how many viewers actively approved of the video. It is usually the largest part of your engagement and a fast check on whether the content matched the promise of the title and thumbnail.

The comment rate (comments ÷ views) is a deeper signal than a like — commenting takes more effort. A high like rate with a low comment rate often means the video was enjoyed but did not provoke discussion; asking a specific question at the end is the standard fix.

Where to find your stats

All of these numbers are in YouTube Studio, under the analytics for each individual video. You can also compare videos in the channel-level overview. Likes, comments and shares for each video are all shown in its analytics.

How to improve engagement on your videos

  • Ask viewers to like the video if they found it useful — a simple, direct request often helps.
  • End with one specific question to invite comments, instead of a generic "let me know what you think".
  • Hook viewers in the first few seconds — keeping people watching is one of the strongest signals you can send.
  • Reply to thoughtful comments and pin your favourite, so the discussion keeps going after upload.
  • Keep each video to a single clear topic, so viewers who click through get exactly what the title promised.
